Experiential travel and the idea of slow tourism is all the rage these days, with travelers looking for learning opportunities while really getting the feel of a place. These types of hands-on vacations can include anything from cooking classes to acting—and even photography. A Buenos Aires, Argentina-based travel concept that started in 2011, Foto Ruta (which translates into Photo Route) offers travelers a way to discover cities in a creative and sociable way—by combining photography and exploration via a suite of workshops, experiences and tours. The company also now has branches in London; Santiago, Chile; and Barcelona; as well as pop-up events in New York. Sign me up!

By combining street photography with city exploration, Foto Ruta encourages travelers to be present in the moment—noticing all of the little details surrounding them. The idea is to enhance the popularity of camera-phone photography and social media, all while encouraging teamwork and web interaction.

Choose from several experiences, including:

Foto Ruta Clue

This experience is right up my alley. It begins with a street-photography workshop, after which participants head out in small teams armed with a map pack and a set of clues. The clues navigate travelers on a journey of discovery around a selected area, where they then interpret and capture the clues on camera. The day ends with a glass of wine and a review of each team’s photos. Carmen Sandiego would be proud!

Foto Ruta iPhone Tour

This urban excursion combines the latest smart-phone app technology to teach participants how to take amazing photos. It’s combined with a creative exploration of the city, encouraging participants to capture the city’s pop-art persona.

Foto Ruta Street Scape
Forget about the typical tourist traps. This journey leads participants to a city’s undiscovered locations, with a pro photographer and city specialist leading the way. So, not only will you find hidden locales, but you’ll also learn how to take great snapshots along the way.

Foto Ruta Academia

Set against a backdrop of authentic, original and inspiring city sites, this street photography tour offers one-on-one professional photography instruction over the course of the afternoon.
